Domestic and International Airports In Ghana

Kotoka International Airport

This is the country’s leading international airport, operated by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL). The Kotoka Airport was formerly known as Ghana International Airport but was renamed to Kotoka International Airport in the honor of Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka (1926–1967). The airport was also originally a military airport used by the British Royal Air Force during World War II in 1946 but it was handed over to civilian authority after a successful pull-out by the military. Not only is the Katoka airport the largest in the country, it is also one of the best so far with about three passenger terminals meant to serve over two million passengers. The first terminal (also known as Terminal 1) is meant to serve regional and domestic operators while the terminal 2 serves international and long-haul operators and terminal 3 which is expected to be completed by the end of May 2018, will have a large commercial and retail area and six boarding bridges for the benefit of the passengers.

Kumasi Airport

The Kumasi airport is another popular airport in Ghana. Second, only to the Katoka international airport, it is situated just 3.5 kilometres from Kumasi, the capital city of the Ashanti Region of this west African country and it is meant to serve the Kumasi area of Ghana though it has attracted lots of traffic ever since. The airport which started operation in 1943 is currently undergoing rehabilitation in order to upgrade it to international standard, it will likely be ready by the end of 2018 as the construction of additional parking aprons, a new terminal building, as well as an extension of the runway, gets completed. The Ghanian government also plans to upgrade the airport to international standards in the nearest future.

Sunyani Airport

Established in the 1960s for domestic flights, the Sunyani airport was officially unveiled on the 13th of July 1974 by Col. P.K. Agyekum, the then commissioner for Transport and Communications and it was set up to serve the people of Sunyani town of the Brong-Ahafo Region in Ghana, it is also being managed by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL). Although it has not been operational for about two years, the services of the Sunyani airport has helped to bring about socio-economic development in the area.

Tamale Airport

This is an airport serving the people of Tamale town in Ghana but it was formally founded as a main advanced operational base for troops during World War II. In December 2008, it was upgraded to international standard with the required facilities. Takoradi Airport

Located in Sekondi-Takoradi, a city in Ghana, the Takoradi airport is another Ghanaian airport that has its history dating back to the second world war. The airport was highly utilised by foreign force during world-war II. Its IATA airport code is TKD while the ICAO airport code is DGTK. As much as the airport is meant for the military, it also serves as a domestic flight from Sekondi-Takoradi, which is the capital of Western Region, southern Ghana.

Wa Airport

  This airport is located in the upper western region of Ghana it is meant to serve the people of Wa in Ghana’s Upper West Region.

Yendi Airport

Yendi airport in Ghana is located in a town known as Yendi the capital of Yendi Municipal district, in the northern region of Ghana. The airport was built to serve the people in this area.
